Birthstones: Origin, meaning and list by month
What are Birthstones ?
The beauty and scarcity of precious and fine stones have fascinated man since time began.
They are emblems of power and wealth and have often been associated with mystical powers and therapeutical virtues.
Today birthstones - and for some the belief in the virtues that are linked to them - are regaining popularity, notably with an increase in demand for alternative medecin and non-conventional therapies.
More importantly and going beyond this observation, natural and coloured stones are an integral part of the modern fashion industry, widely used in the new layering trend in jewellery for example.
It is important to be able to advise and offer your clientele a range of fashionable, highly desirable coloured stone jewellery.
Receiving or giving a birthstone jewel is an original, personal gift - and worth talking about to your customers who may not have thought of the idea themselves.
The link between natural stones and a specific month of the year is fairly recent. However, the legend of the 12 coloured stones goes back to biblical times, the book of Exodus details that Aaron, brother of Moses, wore them on his breastplate, one for each of the 12 Israeli tribes. Subsequently the stones were linked to the signs of the zodiac and the stars. Over time, the birthstones were assigned to the months of the year and in 1912 the National Association of Jewelers in the USA drew up an official list of birthstones (all clear stones) that has evolved slightly since.
