750/1000 Gold (18 carats, also called solid gold) is an alloy of 75% pure gold and 25% silver and copper, whereas 375/1000 Gold (or 9 carats) contains 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% silver and copper. 375 Gold allows for luxury-looking jewellery with a similar shine and appearance to 750/1000 Gold, while reducing the cost of the pieces.

The millesimal fineness system has replaced carats in most European countries, including France since 1995.
